Relining

A process that consists of the anatomical-functional rehabilitation of the intaglios of a complete or partial removable prosthesis. It aims to restore the stability and retention of a prosthesis.

Relining can be done directly (in the chair) or indirectly (in the laboratory).

Reasons for relining:

  • Bone resorption

  • Weight loss

  • Immediate prosthesis

Rebasing

A process that consists of completely replacing the base of a prosthesis. It also improves the stability and retention of the prosthesis but it cannot be done indirectly, therefore in the laboratory.

Reasons for relining:

  • Porosity of the base

  • Lack of lip support

  • Stained dentures

The benefits of relining and rebasing are:

  • Improved stability and comfort of the denture

  • Reduced food debris trapped between the denture and the gums

  • Better distribution of chewing pressure

  • Extended life of the denture
