Implant-supported dentures

An implant-supported denture is a solution to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of placing an implant, which is an artificial titanium root, in the jawbone. Once the implant is integrated into the bone (after a healing period of a few months), an abutment is placed on top of the implant. This abutment can then support a denture, a crown, a bridge or a removable prosthesis. The implant-supported denture offers better stability and comfort than traditional removable dentures, because it is fixed to the implants and not to the patient's natural anatomical structures. In order to use an implant-supported denture, it is necessary to have enough bone in the jaw to accommodate the implants.

The advantages of an implant-supported prosthesis over a traditional denture are as follows:

  • Stability and chewing comfort: The implant-supported prosthesis offers better stability and chewing comfort than traditional removable dentures, because it is fixed to the implants and not to the patient's natural anatomical structures.

  • Slows down bone resorption: The presence of implants in the jawbone helps slow down bone resorption due to the absence of one or more teeth.

  • No glue needed: Unlike traditional dentures, the implant-supported prosthesis does not require the use of glue to be held in place.

  • Easy to clean: The implant-supported prosthesis is easy to clean, because it is fixed to the implants and does not need to be removed for cleaning.

  • Longer lifespan: Implant-supported dentures have a longer lifespan than traditional dentures because they are attached to implants and do not undergo the same mechanical constraints.

  • Natural aesthetics: Implant-supported dentures offer a natural aesthetic result because they are custom-designed to fit the patient's mouth perfectly.

However, it is important to note that implant-supported dentures require surgery and can be more expensive than traditional dentures. In addition, it is necessary to have enough bone in the jaw to accommodate the implants.
