DENTURIST SERGIO LOPEZ
Complete Denture
The removable complete prosthesis, also known as a “denture”, is designed to replace all missing natural teeth in the upper, lower or both arches. The complete prosthesis is held in place in the mouth by the suction effect “suction” created by the saliva that accumulates between the prosthesis and the gum. The term removable means that the prosthesis can be removed from the mouth without effort for its daily maintenance or simply to sleep.
A mouth without teeth faces a series of disadvantages that affect health and profoundly alter the patient’s quality of life. Teeth are used for chewing, speaking and provide a crucial aesthetic appearance. If we do not chew properly, our digestion and health suffer.
Advantage:
-
Reduced cost compared to other more expensive types of treatments such as dental implants
-
Provides good aesthetics to the patient's mouth
-
Its placement in the patient's mouth is faster than implant treatment
Disadvantages:
-
The life time of removable complete dentures is 5 years, since the bone tends to atrophy over the years.
-
Sometimes, these dentures can be somewhat uncomfortable for the patient because they can move.
-
Decreased taste of food and ability to chew food.
Partial prosthesis
A partial prosthesis, in comparison with a complete prosthesis (denture), is a device that allows one or more teeth to be replaced in order to improve phonetics, mastication, and aesthetics.
There are several types of partial prostheses:
-
Acrylic partial prosthesis
-
Metal partial prosthesis
-
Flexible partial prosthesis (flexite, nylon, valplast)
Reinforcement and Repairs
Dentures manufactured or repaired using wire mesh or fiberglass reinforcements strengthen the prosthesis, maintaining an attractive appearance. It is an ideal alternative for patients who, with biting forces, break the denture.
A broken denture can usually be repaired. However, it is recommended to entrust this task to a denturist, because only he has the expertise and materials to carry out an adequate repair. It is important to know that trying the experiment yourself can have unfortunate consequences for the denture and for your health. The glues found over the counter are toxic and the results obtained are never reliable or durable. Dentures made or repaired using wire mesh or fiberglass reinforcements strengthen the denture, while maintaining an attractive appearance. This is an ideal alternative for patients who, with the chewing forces, cause the denture to break.
Repairable damage:
The denture broken in half
The cracked or worn denture
One or more teeth have come loose
A tooth or a claps (in a partial denture) is broken
A natural tooth is lost.
A tooth needs to be added following extraction
It all starts with an oral exam and the denture to determine if it is be possible to repair it. Most of the time, the denturist is able to do the work in a few hours.
If the denture is already 6 years old, the teeth are too worn or a major adjustment needs to be made, the effectiveness and durability of the repair cannot be guaranteed. It is then preferable to completely replace the prosthesis
